Marty has many years of experience interacting with and providing critical services to Cancer Center members. With the Advisory Board, she developed the Facility’s business plan.
Dr. Veigl’s commitment to the Gene Expression & Genotyping Facility developed from a combination of her own direct research interests in exploitation of this technology and from her commitment to providing important services for her colleagues in the Cancer Center. Dr. Veigl has direct experience with both RNA and DNA technology, and following upon her interest in mutation spectra and gene mutation databases, has developed expertise in data manipulation and database management. She is committed to assuring that this Facility remains on the cutting edge of this rapidly developing high through-put technologies to assess gene expression & to identify DNA SNPs.

Dr. Leahy has extensive experience in molecular biology having spent many years investigating the signal transduction pathways controlling intermediate metabolism. He joined the Facility as Manager in February, 2000. Dr. Leahy is expert in all technical aspects of the Affymetrix gene expression array system. This includes all areas from consultation on experimental design and sample preparation to sample processing, data acquisition, management and analytical mining. Dr. Leahy continually monitors new developments in the field with a view toward incorporating these developments into the list of services offered by the Facility to its clients. He facilitates a Users Group forum in which he presents instructional material on quality control issues, and data analysis and disseminates the latest breaking information on new products and services. Dr. Leahy also has several collaborative arrangements with Facility Users and serves as User Group Meeting Coordinator.

Debora joined the Facility in April, 2002. Prior to coming to academia, she worked in a high throughput Bioinformatics DNA screening group at the Genetics Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is proficient in all the aspects of the Affymetrix GeneChip platform, for both expression and mapping arrays. She is also a qualified operator of the ABI RT-PCR platform, utilized for expression and genotyping studies. As Facility Manager, Debora continues to utilize her organizational and troubleshooting skills to improve workflow and sample tracking for the facility.

Chunbiao Li has many years of experience in molecular and cellular biology, particularly in the field of regulation of gene expression. He spent four years in the Department of Reproductive biology in CWRU investigating the role of the renin-angiotensin system in pregnancy-induced hypertension. That position leaned heavily on the use of quantitative RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and other molecular and cellular biological techniques. Later, he joined the National Prion Disease Surveillance Center at CWRU, where he became involved in the clinical diagnosis of Jacob-Creutzfeldt disease by protein chemistry methods. He joined our Core Facility in October, 2002, and currently processes almost all Affymetrix and Quantitative RT-PCR expression projects. He is the most experienced member of our staff in the area of PCR-based technology. He also assists clients with their ABI SNP projects. Chunbiao draws from an extensive background in medicine, molecular and cellular biology and brings strong talents, acquired during these earlier experiences, to bear on our clients’ expression projects.
