The Quant-iT PicoGreen reagent from Molecular Probes enables the quantitation of as little as 25 pg/ml of dsDNA. The advantages of PicoGreen over other fluorescent based stains, is that the linear detection range extends over more than 4 orders of magnitude with a single dye concentration. The linearity is maintained in the presence of common contaminants in nucleic acid preparations such as urea, salts, ethanol, chloroform, detergents, proteins and agarose. PicoGreen is up to 10,000-fold more sensitive than UV absorbance measurements, requiring much less sample for quantitation.
